On September 1, 1999, NHL legend Mario Lemieux was officially approved as the majority owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. Instead of taking over $30 million in deferred payments the team owed him, he converted it into equity—adding $5 million in cash to become the controlling stakeholder. His ownership helped revitalize the franchise, leading to multiple Stanley Cup wins
