2001 – MLB and other leagues cancel games after the 9/11 attacksIn response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Major League Baseball cancelled all games scheduled for the rest of that day—then extended cancellations for several days. The NFL also delayed its schedule, and other sports made similar adjustments. The postponements had major financial, operational, and logistical impacts for the leagues and teams.
ESPN’s SportsCenter interruptionOn September 11, 2001, ESPN interrupted its normal programming to simulcast ABC News coverage of the attacks. Later, it aired a shortened edition of SportsCenter focused on cancelled games, the crisis, and what sports were doing in response.
